Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the folks at the Broke and the Bookish. Each week has a different theme where participants try to come up with ten things to fit the theme.
This week’s topic is Ten Websites I Love That Aren’t about Books.
I never go a day without checking reddit. It’s basically a place where all the news I need is gathered, customized to my desire based on the subreddits I’m subscribed to. It’s not called the front page of the Internet for no reason. I get most of my gaming news from here. There’s also a ton of book related subreddits too. R/fantasy in particular has a lot of author interactions.
It’s more of a podcast than a website, but it’s one I follow regularly. They have three main podcasts – the GameOverGreggy show (random topics like Questions You Need Answered Before You Die), the Gamescast (video game news) and PS I Love You XOXO (PlayStation specific content).
My go to source for Liverpool FC news (besides reddit). Liverpool FC is a football (or soccer) club in the English Premier League that I support. They have some great opinion pieces, and some good tactical analysis pieces. Though I find myself not visiting it as often as before.
TED talks are a great source of general information, which may not be applicable to your day to day life, but is still interesting to listen to and think about. Some of my favorites include Do schools kill creativity? , The power of introverts and Are we in control of our own decisions?
Technically a YouTube channel, Extra Credits is a bite size video game lesson series. It’s short enough to learn something, but not long enough to learn everything. Ultimately it’s meant to draw attention to some of the problems faced by the game industry as well as provide some thought provoking game developing theories.
Yet another YouTube channel, Every Frame a Painting examines the art of film making. They are mostly video essays on how certain things are done in film making and why, for example, a tracking shot or a reverse shot. He usually has a video every 5 weeks, so don’t burn through his library too quickly, else you’ll find yourself wanting more where none could be had. Nerdwriter is also an excellent channel with similar content.
An anime blog. While I no longer keep up with the latest anime, I still watch them occasionally. This is my go to blog for thoughts on the latest anime.
Pretty pictures. Lots of pretty pictures of Japan. I used to be very into Japanese culture, not quite as much nowadays, but a visit to Japan remains high on my bucket list. Culture Japan helps keep the dream alive. And Persona. Can’t wait for Persona 5.
A quiz website where I spend more time than I’d like to admit. Okay, they have a literature category, so technically it’s a bookish website? But I spend as much time in that category as I spend in geography, history and sports. So I’m going to count this.
Wait but Why (Caleb’s Pick)
It relates to a lot of things we all face in life, but never actually managed to find out why. Ranging from topics such as why procrastinators procrastinate to why gen y yuppies are unhappy, there are tons of well researched topics that are interestingly written for the reader.
Those are the ten websites I visit regularly (well 9+1), that are not about books. There’s some writing sites I frequent as well, but I didn’t include them, because technically they are about books, right?
So what are the ten non book related websites you visit regularly?
Sporcle is interesting. I just tried it.😁👍

Glad you like it. 😀 It can become quite a time sink sometimes.

I have been on the fence for a long while about Reddit – I just have so many accounts, I don’t k ow if I really need a new one!!

You can start by being a lurker. I just use my account to subscribe to subreddits. I rarely ever post anything or comment. It’s really a great site and has almost every subreddit you can think of to cater to your taste.

Maybe I will check it out and add another account to my long list of social media 🙂

OMG, Reddit. I also frequent Reddit pretty much all throughout the day, it’s my ‘go-to’ boredom website when I have nothing else I really want to do. I frequent AskReddit a lot and also love smaller subs like /r/childrenfallingover and /r/gifrecipes, haha. 😛
Great list! I’ll have to check out the ones I’m unfamiliar with for sure.
Here’s my TTT. 🙂

Thanks! I frequent AskReddit a lot too. Tonnes of interesting stories. The all time top post for r/childrenfallingover is the best! So unexpected. 😀 I’ve recently fallen victim to r/reallifedoodles. Burnt half a day away on that one.

Not until now. I think I’m gonna have to say goodbye to another half a day. Haha.

I love Danny Choo’s project Mirai Suenaga. I use to always spend my time on Culture Japan reading about smart dolls and anime figurines. I love keeping up with the current anime too even though I seldom watch them now.

I love Mirai too. Still expecting the anime haha. The moekanas are also great too.

Omg another bookish football fan! My second hobby next to books is definitely football! I watch in the Netherlands so I don’t get to watch many Premier League games

Yay, football fan!! I don’t follow a lot of Eredivisie news, but I know they’re well known for producing talents. Especially Ajax. Which team do you support?

I support Ajax, sadly they made a misstep on the last competition day and became second this year 😞

That’s too bad but at least they’ll be challenging for the title again next season. Liverpool on the other hand…

Yeah I read lost of teams were kind of dissapointing in the PL this year. In Holland we mostly read about Man United because of Van Gaal

Yup. Leicester City won the league. They were 14th last season. A great underdog story to follow though. Ah, Van Gaal, I think he might not be here next season. Seems like Man Utd are looking for another manager.

Yeah I heard about Leicester City, so great for them! I don’t think Van Gaal will stay either, but I can’t say he’s done a good job at Man United, so it’s fair that he might not be there next season.

It’s great! The pictures are so pretty. I really hope to visit Japan some day. Wait but why definitely can be a time sink. Haha. The archive is pretty sizable at this point.

Reddit seriously confuses me 😂 but a lot of my stranger Google searches have lead me to threads there on weird and creepy things and I’ve got caught up reading them for hours. I haven’t heard of any of the other sites, but some of them sound really interesting so I’ll definitely check them out 🙂

It confused me at first too, but once I got use to it, it was a blast. Reddit definitely does have its more creepy areas. R/nosleep is one of them.
Hope you find something you like. 😀

Ah, yeah the nosleep is one I’ve been on a bit! I don’t think I could ever post there, but it’s good stalking the threads haha.
