Ten Facts About Me

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly feature created by the good folks at the Broke and the Bookish. Each week has a different theme where participants try to come up with ten things to fit the theme.

This week is Ten Facts about Yourself. That was… unexpected. I recently did 11 facts for the Liebster Award, you can check that out. I’ll try to come up with 10 new things, but this is going to be hard.

  1. I’m Malaysian.
  2. I’m Chinese.
  3. Since I’m a Chinese in Malaysia (and studied Mandarin in school), I’m trilingual. I can read, write and speak Mandarin, English and Malay. Though I must say my Mandarin(writing) and Malay (speaking) have deteriorated from lack of use. There’s also a bunch of Chinese dialects that I can speak or understand.
  4. I’ve never been outside of South East Asia. I want to travel, but it’s not a priority for me right now. There’s a few places I want to visit – Tokyo, Rome, Venice and Paris among others.
  5. I love book series! The longer the better! At least that was what I used to think. Now I can’t find time to read a long series anymore 😦
  6. Most of the series I collect have one book missing. I don’t know why. I blame the local bookstores for not having every entry. I mean they have every book in the Falling Kingdoms series except the first one. THE FIRST ONE! (Thankfully they’ve since restock and I got my copy!)
  7. The first books I ever read was the Peter and Jane series, or The Key Words Reading Scheme. I guess that’s where my love of series came from.
  8. I own a PSP, Vita, PS3 and PS4. Sony fanboy all the way. (I also own an NES and a NDS. A 2DS might or might not be coming sometime in the second half of the year.)
  9. The first game I ever owned was Red Alert 2. More RTSes please.
  10. I love fantasy! Books, games, movies, give them all to me!

Okay, that was easier than I expected. I had a hard time coming up with the 11 for the Liebster Award.

  1. Great list! I’m Chinese too, but I can hardly speak Mandarin, let alone write them. I always get teased about that, haha. Number 6, I understand exactly how you feel; I felt the same way when I wanted to get the whole set of the Keys to the Kingdom.

    • Thanks! I originally did not include the studied in a Mandarin school part and then I remembered not every Chinese actually speaks and write Mandarin, like my mom… Haha.
      Number 6 is a real bad thing 😦 I hope they’ll improve their orders but I doubt it. I don’t think the reading market in Malaysia is very big right now.

      • Haha… It’s great having a parent fluent in Mandarin both in writing and in speech. My parents mostly speak Cantonese.
        I think the reason the reading market isn’t so big is due to the price of the books in Malaysia. Getting the latest books would really burn a hole in my pocket.

      • Cantonese is pretty common in West Malaysia, right? Here it’s Hokkien. I can understand both, but struggle to speak them.
        That’s definitely part of it. I usually don’t buy a lot of books unless there’s a sale or something. And then when the sale comes I buy bags of them. Haha. At least BB1M helps a little.

      • Yup, Cantonese and Hakka is the common dialect here. I can understand Hakka but it’s difficult to speak. I hear people speak Hokkien here too, but unfortunately, I can’t understand it at all.
        Yup, BB1M is every bookworm ticket to getting a good book! I’m still waiting for the Big Bad Wolf Book Sale though.

      • I can only speak Hakka to my mom, anyone else and the words just refuse to form in my head. Haha. The Hakka I speak is pretty rare here though. The common one here is the Hopoh variant.
        Big Bad Wolf! Hopefully I’ll be able to go someday, or get my friend to help me buy some books. Haha.

      • I didn’t realise there were variants. My mum is Hakka too so I learnt to understand the dialect by listening to her.
        I’m sure Big Bad Wolf will make it to the East Peninsular. They’re planning to go around the South East Asia.

      • I think there’s variants in the Hokkien in the West and East too. Not 100% sure on that though.
        Really hope we’ll get it here. The deals they offer are just amazing.

  2. I like fantasy books! It has been a while since I played any sort of Game, but I liked playing LOTR on Xbox … Despite the fact that I wasn’t very good! I also always have missing books in a series, but that is mostly my fault because I buy them in physical at random. So, I have Winter as a physical copy but none of the rest, or I have Shatter Me, and none of the rest etc. I will complete them all at some point!! Mostly when my bank account will allow me too! 😂

  5. I’m Chinese too! But I’m from Indonesia, which kind of means that I’m just bilingual – and that’s because I went to an international school. I can understand Mandarin Chinese and Hakka, but I can’t speak them. 😛

    Fantasy is my current favourite genre, so I hear you. I haven’t been playing any games (unfortunately) but I do occasionally read their wikis, haha.

    • Is your other language Indonesian? Just want to make sure I got that right.
      I speak Hakka too, from my mom’s side. But there’s a ton of different Hakka variations… so not sure if the Hakka you understand is the same Hakka as the one I speak. Haha.
      Wikis is a great resource :D! I read the stories of some of the Final Fantasy games before I actually played them. Bad practice, I know, but I just couldn’t resist. Haha.

  8. Paris is beautiful, you should throw Scotland on your list. The architecture, history and scenery are absolutely stunning. I really want to do a tour of Japan and all the Islands. I pretty much want to do anywhere in Asia because my best friend growing up came from Hong Kong and the culture seems different and interesting and I just want to explore as much as I can.

    • Scotland is great too, it’s on my list of places visit someday. I feel the same way about Europe and North America. It’s just such a different culture and will be interesting to experience.

  9. Okayy, it’s so nice you’re actually trilingual. I try my best in English, but I’m not 100% there yet. And I know how hard Mandarin is, so it definitely should be something to be proud of!
    And it’s also very nice that you enjoy fantasy so much, but I’m the complete opposite! Although I do enjoy some books and movies, my favorites are always the realistic ones. Of course, dragons and witches are AMAZING, but I always find myself rewatching romantic comedies or crying over contemporary books.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • Thanks! Haha, Mandarin is actually my first language, in terms of speaking anyway. I haven’t written in it for a long time, which is why that’s deteriorated. The characters are difficult to remember.
      Contemporary books are definitely great! I watch a lot of romantic comedies too, it’s kind of a guilty pleasure for me. Haha.

    • Fantasy! Oh yeah, I think Wheel of Time is infamous for the drag, though personally I didn’t feel it. A Song of Ice and Fire does feel a little draggy in the fourth and fifth book. Go home already, Daenerys. Haha.
