Ten Books That Will Make You Laugh

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created by the folks at the Broke and the Bookish. Each week has a different theme where participants try to come up with ten things to fit the theme.

This week’s topic is Ten Books That Will Make You Laugh.

Honestly, I can’t come up with ten books that made me laugh. I mean, I do remember laughing while reading, but I don’t remember them specifically. For example, I remember laughing while reading Wheel of Time, but I can’t name which books. I just remember stuff like Faile being embarrassed that she had the same nickname as a horse and Mat being up to his shenanigans.

So here are some of the books that I did manage to come up with.

The Fire Thief Trilogy

I don’t see a lot of people talking about this book, but it was one of my favorites during my teen years. It was a fast read, I could finish all three in one afternoon. And honestly, it’s more of a middle grade book. But I found the books hilarious. It has a lot of fourth wall breaking moments, and footnotes that are funny as hell. It’s a direct sort of humor and really, the focus on the books is on the humor, which may not be for everyone.

The trilogy features three whimsical stories about three different protagonist helping the infamous fire thief, Prometheus and his fight against Olympus. The series has an overarching plot (Prometheus’s quest to find a true hero) but otherwise each book is separate. You can just read the first one without continuing the series.

The Reckoners Trilogy

The Reckoners is about a group of regular humans fighting to take down superhuman villains. The main character David has a talent for horrible metaphors (similes), more than a few put a smile on my face. One scene in particular made me laugh out loud. In said scene, he compares his love interest to a potato. Yes, a potato.

The Bands of Mourning (Mistborn #6)

Overall, the Bands of Mourning is a rather grim book. There’s one scene in the Bands of Mourning that had me going from a goofy grin to outright laughing. It’s when the cast goes into a hotel and makes the owner’s head spin with talks of murders and quick getaways, trying to prep her for what might possibly hit the group, which only leaves her ever the more confused. Poor Aunt Gin.

Off to be the Wizard (Magic 2.0 #1)

Off to be the Wizard is about a computer geek who finds the source code of the world. When he changes the codes, he can manipulate the world around him. He uses it to time travel back to Medieval England and pretend to be a wizard, only to discover he’s not the first one with that idea. Like, the Fire Thief Trilogy, Off to be the Wizard isn’t a great work of art, but it is full of laugh out loud moments. I’m looking forward to reading the sequels.

Hyperbole and a Half (Caleb’s pick)

This started off as a web comic, this book appeals to the inner child in me which I believe we all have. It’s great for people who dislike reading as the book is really entertaining with funny illustrations. They are also often times something we can relate to our situations and best of all it gave birth to a meme!

That’s all I could come up with, even with one entry from my co-blogger. I don’t know whether it’s because I don’t remember laughing or because I just don’t read a lot of funny books. The truth is probably somewhere in the middle. Anyway, to top up the list here are some funny books in my TBR.

Going Postal and other Discworld books

Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books are full of satire. I was reading Going Postal but I’ve set it aside and haven’t picked it back up yet. Soon. Hopefully. At this point, I will have to restart the book. I’ve forgotten most of the story, but I do know it’s about a conman trying to get a postal office running.

Good Omens

Another Pratchett novel, this time written together with Neil Gaiman. It is about the end of the world. Apocalypse has come, however, there is one hitch in the plan. The antichrist is missing. A six part TV series is coming soon.

Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

One of the great satirical classics, HG2G tells the story of Arthur Dent who leaves Earth moments before it is destroyed to make way for a bypass built by an alien race known as the Vogons. The duo travel the galaxy using the Hitchhiker’s Guide.

Catch-22

Don’t let its status as a great literary novel fool you, Catch-22 is a satirical masterpiece about a group of airmen wanting to escape dangerous missions. The only way to do it is to plead insanity, however only the sane would want out. This is Catch-22. The moment you plead insanity to leave is the moment that you’re decidedly sane.

Me and Earl and the Dying Girl

A story about a young filmmaker who befriends a girl dying of cancer. I’ve watched the film and liked it a lot. There are some funny moments, but considering the subject it’s not all cheerful. The book is said to be similar. Planning to read it someday.

Phew, this is the hardest TTT I’ve done so far. Racked my brain for a while to come up with ten titles to fit this list. I know it’s not necessary to hit ten, but part of me is always thinking “almost there, almost there!”

So that’s my ten picks, what are yours? Let me know in the comments down below.

  1. A little cartoony for some tastes, but all work as well or better than they did way back when. I’ll stop at six because I’d be here all night otherwise (in no order, off the top of my head):

    1. Life in Hell: Matt Groening did a hilarious pre-post SImpsons strip that skewers everything about living in some laugh ’til it hurts strips. Here’s a collection link: http://lifeinhellarchives.tumblr.com/

    2. Calvin & Hobbes (any collection): Anything Bill Watterson did (and has done since kind of reviving the strip thanks to Berkeley Breathed reviving the great and also hilarious 3. Bloom County) is flat out genius.

    4. The Non-Adventures of Wonderella: http://nonadventures.com/ Justin Pierce’s not so super heroine manages to be instantly and constantly amusing on a few levels.

    5. Charles Schulz’s Peanuts: Artist’s Edition HC. It’s expensive and probably out of print, but this collection of Charles Schulz’ classic strips presented in their original art size is a great example of IDW’s commitment to quality repro editions that will make your friends jealous if you have a few lying around:

    6. Archie Archives Vol. 12: Yeah, ARCHIE. 70+ years old and before it got all reality based and zombified in different comics, it was pure slapstick fun for the first few decades. Dark Horse has been collecting all the older issues and putting out these nice editions that make for a fun look at what made fans laugh way back in the day:

  2. I was going to put HHGTTG on my list, and then I just didn’t. But the series BELONGS on there, so I don’t know what I was thinking. My husband is also a HUGE fan of the Discworld novels, so perhaps I should give them a try sometime.

    My TTT.

I totally laughed so much over that book. XD Plus Steelheart = amazing. Basically David’s metaphors are so awful they’re hilarious. 😛 (I’m reading Firefight right now!) Here’s my TTT!

    • I think it was just announced a few days ago. Neil Gaiman is writing the script himself. Hype!

I hope you enjoy Firefight! It’s my personal favorite in the series.

  4. I love catch-22 and the hitchhikers guide. Great picks. I think a lot of books have humor, but you wouldn’t necessarily think of them that way. I put The Fault In Our Stars on my list for that reason. I definitely remember laughing, but I really had to rack my brain to remember that cuz I could only remember crying. Lol.

    • Yup, I have that problem. It’s only after looking at some of the lists today that I realized some of the books I have read is actually funny, but I just didn’t associate laughter with said books.
